Hôtel des Ventes de Saint-Aubin – Maître Marc Labarbe – Cabinet Eric Turquin – Toulouse, 27 June 2019, la Halle aux Grains
On 27 June 2019, the painting by Caravaggio, Judith and Holofernes (1571-1610), discovered by the auctioneer Marc Labarbe five years ago in an attic in Toulouse, France, where it had lain forgotten for probably over100 years, will be sold at auction in Toulouse in collaboration with the art appraisal firm Cabinet Turquin.
The rediscovery of Judith and Holofernes, a long lost Caravaggio masterpiece, is a major event and a decisive contribution to the œuvre of one of the greatest painters in history.
The authenticity of the rediscovered work, which is in exceptional condition for a painting dating from 1607, is well documented. Furthermore, many experts of the work of the Lombardi master have supported the attribution to Caravaggio. It has also been confirmed by a number of scientific analyses and supported by the results of a recentlight cleaning of the old varnish.
The painting will be exhibited in London, Paris, New York and Toulouse before being sold at auction in Toulouse on 27 June 2019.
